Come On – We’re Going for Breakfast

Friday, October 26th, 2012

There are two ways of approaching weekend breakfasts, one, change up your dating pattern and substitute those boozy nights out with a breakfast date, or two, if your date went swimmingly the previous night, drag yourself and the person sleeping next to you out of bed for a breakfast treat!

I’m not sure if its just in my world, but going out for breakfast seems to be a massively increasing trend at the moment – and things have certainly moved on from the greasy fry up in your local cafe. Maybe my friends are getting slightly older (notice I’m not getting any older) and need the full works to handle the morning after the night before, or simply that living in London we’re fortunate enough to have some wonderful breakfast venues right on our doorstep. Either way, if you love to start you weekend with a hearty, carbo loaded fuelled brekkie, or are looking for fresh ways to entertain your date then please read on. Its time to ’shell’ out for some egg-cellent sausage and bacon at one of our 5 favourite breakfast dating venues. For ‘egg-ample’…

Caravan Kings Cross -

Located in Exmouth Market, Caravan is a vibrant, busy, exciting breakfast place. Great menu choice and great atmosphere. Note to self, one side plate of the grilled chorizo next time!

Bistrotheque -

A popular place for the later risers. An impressive open brunch venue with high ceilings and bright white brick walls, with a huge menu ranging from oysters to the classic eggs benedict and a wine menu if a bloody mary just won’t cut it…?

Breakfast Club – Angel

There’s normally a queue out the door but don’t panic the queue moves rather sharpish. A wonderful choice of smoothie (by the jug load) and great a variety breakfast options. Pancakes are a must if you are heading to the Breakfast Club. Beware of the sugar rush!

Lantana Cafe -

Tucked down a laneway off Goodge Street in Fitzrovia serving a delightful, simple menu in a less hectic, more relaxed environment. Bacon sandwich and sourdough bread comes recommended.

The Modern Pantry -

‘Charming’ is a word to describe this and the breakfast is a ‘classic dish mash up!’ Focusing on including a range of different ingredients from around the globe sending your early morning taste buds wild.

So, ‘that’s all yolks’ if you have a favourite breakfast joint, please feel free to  let us know and we will be sure to check it out. And, if kicking off the PJ’s and heading out for breakfast really isn’t your thing, then why not check out our other restaurant ideas.

Flyer

The Queen’s Jubilee, to mark 60 years of the Queen’s Reign, will soon be upon us and we’ll all be waving our union jack flags, toasting corgis and enjoying the bonus day off work. Hardly a spare moment to think about dating!

If you’re not neck deep in bunting or queuing up for the egg and spoon race at your local street party, get out and about but remember Queen and country and try to keep it topical…

Old Queen’s Head

A famous Islington haunt, notorious for live music in the upstairs bar and for crowds streaming out onto Essex Road until the wee hours. They have an action packed line-up for Jubilee weekend, including their all day Jubilee party on Tuesday 5th June which kicks off at midday.

McQueen

Food, cocktails, impeccable service and beautiful people, located on the hazy line between the City and Shoreditch. Stylish front room décor in the upstairs bar, a beautiful restaurant annexed and a club downstairs. This Sunday, 3rd June, they are hosting the Paravana Project from 2pm till late. A night notorious for its feel good atmosphere and spot on dance music will be a great way to while away Sunday afternoon.

Queen of Hoxton

One of the East End’s most popular venues, famous for big name DJs, art and its park size roof terrace – to name a few. For her majesty’s pleasure they are hosting their JUBILEE JAMBOREEE! on Sunday 3rd June. BBQ and mojito anyone?

Queen’s Musical

We Will Rock You” running for its 11th year in the Dominion Theatre in Soho, the musical dedicated to Queen in all their glory is a must see. There’s not much of a story line, but it’s pure entertainment start to finish. Cheers Freddy!

Drag Queens

If you want to mingle with guests including ‘boys girls and inbetweenies of every age, race, culture, sexuality and gender’ then head to the ‘The Way Out Club’ in the City (off the Minories) for London’s biggest transgender parties. For something more low key, Saturday nights in Beach Blanket Babylon in Shoreditch play host to some glam drag queens who float around amongst the crowds.

Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park

To be renamed in 2013 after the Olympics, this 500-acre landscaped park in Stratford includes the showpiece Olympic Stadium, plus about four miles of waterways, extensive parkland and facilities that will be left from the Games, including the velodrome and the new landmark of the Anish Kapoor’s Orbit viewing platform and sculpture. Come on London, not long to get it all finished!

Queen Elizabeth II (better known as the QE2)

The QE2 was the flagship of the Cunard Line for nearly 40 years making her maiden voyage in 1969. At 70,327 tons and 963 feet long she is arguably the most famous liner in the world. Now permanently docked in Dubai, how about an elaborate bank holiday treat?

However you decide to spend that free day, enjoy and have a jolly Queen’s Jubilee!

Who said art can’t have a sense of humour? David Shrigley’s ‘Brain Activity’ is full of his praised situational humour and his ridiculous treatment of failure. Showing at the Hayward Gallery until May 10th, it’s already received heaps of admiration and it would be an ideal way to spend a weekend afternoon.

Cruel Summer

Friday, September 30th, 2011

A British Summer is a tease. Its alluring sunny mornings have us rushing to get the BBQ out or head to the park and then as soon as we’re all set, the heavens open (I have horrible memories of bbq’ing under an umbrella) It is cruel. However this last week has come from nowhere. With today’s temperatures beating Turkey’s, this is the hottest place to be. Better late than never. So what’s the best thing to do this weekend whilst the heat wave is here? Drinks + Sun = outdoor drinking.

The Albion
The Albion
Back in the day when vibrant and lively Upper Street was nothing but farmlands, the Albion sprung up in the Georgian era. Enough of the history lesson though, this pub is a lovely place to eat (it won the Observer’s Best Sunday Lunch Award) and has a great walled garden within the Barnsbury conservation area. Ideal setting for an afternoon and it’s not too late in the season for Pimms.
(10 Thornhill Road, Islington, London N1 1HW)

The Lockside Lounge
Lockside Lounge
Camden-ites will  know the Lockside Lounge well. Cocktails and a roof terrace overlooking the lock (hence the name!), it’s the perfect spot to catch some rays and drink Mojitos until the sun goes down. Then on to the Hawley Arms and maybe a trip to Proud if you’ve managed to last out the afternoon.
(75-89 West Yard, Camden Lock, NW1 8AF)

The Falcon
The Falcon
The Falcon in Clapham is the garden venue of choice for Clapham locals. With a brunch to kill any hangover, you should head down over the weekend. A capacity of up to 300 and an outdoor BBQ, get together a gang and take in the sunny afternoon’s haze. If the weather does turn (don’t worry it won’t), they have plenty of sheltered areas too.
(33 Bedford Road, Clapham, London, SW4 7SQ)

Kensington Roof Gardens
Kensington Roof Gardens
A little more extravagant than the aforementioned, the Kensington Roof Gardens is an idyllic location to pass the afternoon. Home to 4 flamingos (yes, real ones), the picturesque gardens will transport you from the city confines. You will forget where you are. A celebrity favourite.
(99 Kensington High Street Kensington W8 5ED)

Popcorn Prohibited: London’s Most Stylish Cinema?

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

I have terrible memories of cramming into an Odeon on Orange Wednesdays; queuing outside in the cold, fighting my way to the food counter, finding someone else in my seat whilst being pelted with popcorn by the most horrific individuals. I had all but given up on trips to cinema and ruled it out as a credible date venue. It’s too cold for outdoor cinema and let’s face it there’s nothing romantic about someone kicking the back of your chair whilst you pick the pieces of popcorn out of your hair.

The Electric Cinema, Portobello RoadWith Winter just around the corner (sorry!), there is a solution and it’s such a stylish one at that. The Electric Cinema on Portobello Road is a tribute to the pleasure of watching movies. Wander down Portobello Road, peering into the windows of vintage boutiques and antique shops until you arrive at the understated location.

Once you’ve arrived, lean back in the luxury leather armchair seats, set your cold Peroni on the dark wooden side tables and take in the gorgeous interior that will make you think you are in a cinema of days gone by.

Forget clambering over people to top up on Pic & Mix and missing 20 minutes of the film. Instead you can comfortably sashay to the bar at the back of the intimate theatre and the smartly dressed barmen will serve you olives, lemon chicken wraps, homemade sausage rolls and one of the best chocolate brownies you will ever get your hands on. There’s only four more important words here: Beer, wine, cocktails, champagne.

Jane Eyre is currently showing but for something more date neutral, Ryan Gosling’s latest film Drive will premiere from the 23rd September. For more information about The Electric Cinema and other great date ideas, go to our Places page.

Need A New Local?

Tuesday, May 17th, 2011

Have you exhausted the fun out of your local haunts? Or do you just want to mix up your routine a little bit? Stray from your beaten path and check out our ideas and Click member favourites.

East is East
Following its recent acknowledgement as the UK’s coolest postcode, London’s east end is your first go to for all things edgy, different and more importantly, varied. Try Dalston Superstore for something wildly new – New York inspired and quirky. Just down the road is Shoreditch hotspot for the cool crowd, Dreambagsjaguarshoes. It looks like a shop front and has the feel of a common room.

Hoxton Pony

Hoxton Pony is a Click member hotspot

A lot has to be said for the Hoxton Pony on Curtain Road. A cocktail bar and nightclub it is lively every night of the week. If you want to do the whole East end thing but love your West end trappings, this is the bar for you. It’s a hot favourite with our members!

The Great Outdoors
It is getting warmer, I swear it. Though the afternoons look miserable, the temperatures are on the rise and that means when you’re planning you’re next booze up, think alfresco. Luxury roof garden bar, Coq d’Argent above Bank & Cheapside is perfect if champagne-laced cocktails get you excited. Dizzying heights and stunning city views from the top of former department store Dickins & Jones at Aqua Spirit. A wrap around terrace and a Spanish garden – great! Be wary of the smart-casual dress code though.

Pretty Pubs
Cocktail bars, bars/restaurants, sometimes all you want is the pub. Forget old world and try some of these gorgeous locals. The Red Lion in St. James is stunning – classy mahogany interiors and a deep drinks menu that beats the West end price tag, this place has a massive following and is know for great pub food. Built on the site of a former Dominican Monastery is the Black Friar. Marble, mosaic & stained glass make up its interior and there is outdoor seating space. The lamb chops come highly recommended.

Virtual Love

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

What does your online dating profile say about you? Akin to your dating CV if you will, this first point of display in the internet dating world is the single most important thing in ensuring you attract the right messages. Where do you like to go out? What’s your job? Interests?

However  Virtual Lovejust like a CV, your profile is not going to get you there completely. It will get you noticed, sure. But the old saying “actions speak louder than words” is so so true here. On ClickTonight we love you lot to ask each other out on dates – restaurants, bars, cool cafes or meet at our beloved parties. Making plans is the best way to date and to socialise, just make sure you actually do it! Simple.

The internet has changed the way we manage our lives – everything we do now is seemingly uncomplicated. And as we organise our lives on the internet, we now look to micro-manage our dating lives. Thinking back to the old school ways, you could trawl bar after bar looking to meet someone half decent (and you would usually have feign small talk with quite a few frogs first). Now however, internet dating means we are being more pro-active and taking control over who we spend our precious time with.

Don’t get me wrong, you can’t simulate a real date experience online but what you can do is use the internet as a filtering process and also for some great date ideas. We are always trying out new places to go, finding out what works for a first date so we can give you the best tips on hottest new restaurants, hidden gems and great date bars. Call it a labour of love.

Why not ClickTonight and make plans for this weekend? It’s not too late to sneak a cheeky date in!

A Walk In The Park

Monday, March 21st, 2011

There are so many great restaurants and bars to take dates to. I’m still enjoying touring London in what I would like to call “Around the City in 80 Dates” – I promise to divulge more once my research is complete! The causal factor of  my stormy relationship with this country is the weather and the unfortunate conditions it insists on imposing upon my daily life (and my hair). That said, when England enjoys that first day of truly stunning weather and I mean clear blue skies, brilliant sun and warmer temperatures there is nowhere in the world quite like it. The Saturday just gone was one such day.

Deciding to make the most of the sunshine, I arranged a date that had only existed in conversations during pub lunches whilst sheltering from crap conditions. Travelling out to Kent, I went to the grounds of Hever Castle. Formerly the digs of Henry VIII’s Anne Boleyn (yes, the one he had beheaded), the gardens have been dubbed as the most romantic gardens in the country. Before you start thinking that this sounds more like a day trip that would suit your Nan’s interests, give me a chance to explain why on a perfect day like Saturday, Hever Castle and other beautiful outdoor spaces like it, make for a brilliant date.

Hever Castle

The Lake @ Hever Castle

I wasn’t too interested in going inside the castle. I thought the whole Anne Boleyn /Henry VIII adulterous behaviour resulting in chopping off of head, not to mention the loss of the castle in awkward dowry settlements and then being passed on to yet another ex wife in divorce settlements, carried too many bad omens for a date. The main attraction can be found outside. If the idea of starting a date sober is the thing of nightmares for you, fear not as there is a great pub where you can kick things off and get a bit of Dutch courage. The Henry VIII is located at the entrance and does a great lunch menu as well.

It takes about an hour or so to walk the perimeter of the lake and this is a perfect opportunity to get to know someone in a no pressure environment. More than this, by removing someone from their comfort zone and surprising their dating expectations, you might find in this the ideal moment to connect with your date. The very romantic scenery is also sure to inspire a positive mood and the best thing about it is the intimacy of how alone you are.

This is certainly not a new concept. New York’s famous Central Park has areas that have been specifically created by landscape architects to induce feelings of romance and connections with nature. Its no coincidence that thousands of people propose in the park every year (more specifically near Strawberry Fields, named after the famous Beatles’ song). The Romantics wrote poetry about the relationship between love nature and seduction so why not follow the lead of Byron and others like him and take advantage of the alluring outdoors to impress your date. Besides, everyone could do with a bit of fresh air every now and again.

If you don’t want to travel out to the countryside for the day (though I highly recommend it), London boasts some of Europe’s most beautiful parks and once you’ve taken a leisurely stroll around rose garden/lake/zoo?? you can always slip into a beer garden afterwards and enjoy the rest of the sunshine. A walk in the park.

Psst! Don’t forget about our next party
