Flyer

The Queen’s Jubilee, to mark 60 years of the Queen’s Reign, will soon be upon us and we’ll all be waving our union jack flags, toasting corgis and enjoying the bonus day off work. Hardly a spare moment to think about dating!

If you’re not neck deep in bunting or queuing up for the egg and spoon race at your local street party, get out and about but remember Queen and country and try to keep it topical…

Old Queen’s Head

A famous Islington haunt, notorious for live music in the upstairs bar and for crowds streaming out onto Essex Road until the wee hours. They have an action packed line-up for Jubilee weekend, including their all day Jubilee party on Tuesday 5th June which kicks off at midday.

McQueen

Food, cocktails, impeccable service and beautiful people, located on the hazy line between the City and Shoreditch. Stylish front room décor in the upstairs bar, a beautiful restaurant annexed and a club downstairs. This Sunday, 3rd June, they are hosting the Paravana Project from 2pm till late. A night notorious for its feel good atmosphere and spot on dance music will be a great way to while away Sunday afternoon.

Queen of Hoxton

One of the East End’s most popular venues, famous for big name DJs, art and its park size roof terrace – to name a few. For her majesty’s pleasure they are hosting their JUBILEE JAMBOREEE! on Sunday 3rd June. BBQ and mojito anyone?

Queen’s Musical

We Will Rock You” running for its 11th year in the Dominion Theatre in Soho, the musical dedicated to Queen in all their glory is a must see. There’s not much of a story line, but it’s pure entertainment start to finish. Cheers Freddy!

Drag Queens

If you want to mingle with guests including ‘boys girls and inbetweenies of every age, race, culture, sexuality and gender’ then head to the ‘The Way Out Club’ in the City (off the Minories) for London’s biggest transgender parties. For something more low key, Saturday nights in Beach Blanket Babylon in Shoreditch play host to some glam drag queens who float around amongst the crowds.

Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park

To be renamed in 2013 after the Olympics, this 500-acre landscaped park in Stratford includes the showpiece Olympic Stadium, plus about four miles of waterways, extensive parkland and facilities that will be left from the Games, including the velodrome and the new landmark of the Anish Kapoor’s Orbit viewing platform and sculpture. Come on London, not long to get it all finished!

Queen Elizabeth II (better known as the QE2)

The QE2 was the flagship of the Cunard Line for nearly 40 years making her maiden voyage in 1969. At 70,327 tons and 963 feet long she is arguably the most famous liner in the world. Now permanently docked in Dubai, how about an elaborate bank holiday treat?

However you decide to spend that free day, enjoy and have a jolly Queen’s Jubilee!

Summer Dates – London’s Beer Gardens

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2012

England’s weather unpredictable and changeable; England’s pub gardens empty and lifeless. No more; at last the summer has finally decided to grace us with it’s good friend the sun.

What would you say is one of the most popular places for us to be whilst the sun is out? For me it has to be a pub garden – it’s a fantastic destination for a summer date. So next time you are planning a date, check the weather forecast and find the perfect pub garden to enjoy with your beau. And waste no time, as remember; “unpredictable and changeable”.

Here are some popular pub garden destinations in London to get you in the mood:

The Albion, Islington:

It has an attractive courtyard surrounded by lovely trees and colourful flowers and the smell of the barbecue is sure to remind you that it is actually summer.

The Albion Islington

The Avalon, Balham

This pub garden boosts a very large green and luscious space and the perfect place to enjoy a chilled glass of rose, a refreshing pint and a bite to eat.

The Avalon Balham

The Garden Gate, Hampstead:

Being so close to Hampstead Heath many people come here to quench their walking thirst.  Has a great atmosphere with a chilled out and friendly vibe as well as great food, including homemade burgers.

The Garden Gate, Hampstead

Edinboro Castle, Camden:

As soon as the sun is out the beer garden buzzes with atmosphere. Close to Regents Park as well so it is green and tree lined. They often fire up the hog roast so make sure you are apart of that. When nightfalls, the twinkling fairy lights are switched on to add to the alfresco fun of an evening.

Edinboro Castle Camden

We would love to hear about some of your favourite pub gardens.  Do you have any?

Opulence And A Taste Of The Exotic at Gilgamesh

Wednesday, January 25th, 2012

Oh Camden, you are such a strange and surreal place. A real mixture of bars, pubs and restaurants call this lockside area home and the nightlife is so so active. You might even find a few late night revellers crowding around Amy Winehouse’s doorstep. Venture into the Stables Market and you discover live music venues, some quirky watering holes and you might even locate Gilgamesh.

Gilgamesh Camden, Clicktonight.com Date IdeasYou could be forgiven for thinking you had been transported to the West End – red carpet, ropes, tall intimidating girl with clipboard and angry looking bouncer. Though this is very un-Camden like and might not be totally in sync with the local vibe, up the escalator (yes the escalator) and you’ll soon forgive the unnecessary door antics. Inside, it’s huge. Gilgamesh is glamourous and is a taste of uber luxury in the heart of Camden.

Restaurant/bar/club combos are so rarely enjoyable. They often play host to a strange crowd dynamic when no one really feels like they are getting the full experience. Gilgamesh has been smart to separate its drinkers and diners from its party goers.

Set menus are awful. I hate them. A selection of things you don’t really want to eat and make your choice based on “what is the thing I can deal with eating”. The set menu at Gilgamesh is brilliant. I was stubborn enough to stick to a la carte and was left with a serious case of food envy when my date’s food arrived. I did manage to steal some of their Scallop Sui Mai and Hobo Miso Chilean Seabass. The food is not the cheapest but the value for money for the £60 set menu is very good. If you decide to stick to a la carte however, you won’t go wrong. The restaurant is headed up by maestro Head Chef Ian Pengelley.

If dinner has gone well, head upstairs to the 9000 sq ft club where you’ll find VIP booths and plenty of dark corners. Gilgamesh is extravagant, sultry and sexy. A great date venue if you’re willing to splash the $$$$. You won’t fail to impress and if the date doesn’t go as well as you might have hoped, at least the venue wouldn’t be to blame!

Tickets! Tickets! Tickets! We have them. You want them. Our F**K Valentine – Just Party event at Kanaloa is getting closer.

Cruel Summer

Friday, September 30th, 2011

A British Summer is a tease. Its alluring sunny mornings have us rushing to get the BBQ out or head to the park and then as soon as we’re all set, the heavens open (I have horrible memories of bbq’ing under an umbrella) It is cruel. However this last week has come from nowhere. With today’s temperatures beating Turkey’s, this is the hottest place to be. Better late than never. So what’s the best thing to do this weekend whilst the heat wave is here? Drinks + Sun = outdoor drinking.

The Albion
The Albion
Back in the day when vibrant and lively Upper Street was nothing but farmlands, the Albion sprung up in the Georgian era. Enough of the history lesson though, this pub is a lovely place to eat (it won the Observer’s Best Sunday Lunch Award) and has a great walled garden within the Barnsbury conservation area. Ideal setting for an afternoon and it’s not too late in the season for Pimms.
(10 Thornhill Road, Islington, London N1 1HW)

The Lockside Lounge
Lockside Lounge
Camden-ites will  know the Lockside Lounge well. Cocktails and a roof terrace overlooking the lock (hence the name!), it’s the perfect spot to catch some rays and drink Mojitos until the sun goes down. Then on to the Hawley Arms and maybe a trip to Proud if you’ve managed to last out the afternoon.
(75-89 West Yard, Camden Lock, NW1 8AF)

The Falcon
The Falcon
The Falcon in Clapham is the garden venue of choice for Clapham locals. With a brunch to kill any hangover, you should head down over the weekend. A capacity of up to 300 and an outdoor BBQ, get together a gang and take in the sunny afternoon’s haze. If the weather does turn (don’t worry it won’t), they have plenty of sheltered areas too.
(33 Bedford Road, Clapham, London, SW4 7SQ)

Kensington Roof Gardens
Kensington Roof Gardens
A little more extravagant than the aforementioned, the Kensington Roof Gardens is an idyllic location to pass the afternoon. Home to 4 flamingos (yes, real ones), the picturesque gardens will transport you from the city confines. You will forget where you are. A celebrity favourite.
(99 Kensington High Street Kensington W8 5ED)

All You Can Eat Meat

Saturday, September 24th, 2011

I’ve written before of my hatred for chain restaurants and the need to immediately veto them as a date venue. Well I’ve found the exception. It has to be said that this is not first date territory for several reasons. 1. There’s too much food. 2. It’s all meat. Unless you’re unashamedly proud of your monstrous appetite, this is best saved for shhhhh don’t say it….the double date.

Rodizio Rico

Girls get stuck in!

Dreaded by many a dater, the double date comes at a point when he decides to bring his friend (ex wingman now he’s with you) or when she decides to bring her single friend along (so she can get a true verdict on you). Rodizio Rico, the Brazilian all you can eat, is a venue that calls for at least two large appetites present. You pay a set price per head (a la carte is available), help yourself to the amazing selection of salads, cold treats, and then the waiters will appear with a variety of grilled meats for you to choose from (16 different cuts to be precise).

Armed only with a beermat that on one side is red for “no thanks” and green for “keep it coming”, you will be treated to an array of perfectly cooked meat that the waiter will carve for you at the table. The rump steak and topside beef is sublime and though the chicken hearts might not be your preference, the lamb is by far the best thing they will bring you so take full advantage.

A great dining experience for meat lovers alike, you will not be left unsatisfied. Ideal for a Sunday night followed by a few drinks and then home! Rodizio Rico has a few locations around the city. The Islington branch is ideally placed on Upper Street where you can always find a busy bar and live music and the other branches can be found in popular locations, Fulham, O2 and Westbourne Grove. You need to book in advance and trust me on this one, come on an empty stomach.

It’s Bank Holiday Weekend! What Are You Doing?

Friday, August 26th, 2011

This is the best weekend of the Summer. Though traditionally thought of as the unofficial goodbye to our favourite not so sunny season, there’s no reason to be down about it. Here’s some places you should be going to!

Friday
Barts "somewhere on Sloane Avenue"

It’s a secret not many know about but it holds the key to your Friday night. No one really knows where Barts is, and they don’t like to give too much away. There’s just one clue…it’s somewhere on Sloane Avenue in a 1930’s apartment block. Its style is appropriately “speakeasy”, giving you a taste of prohibition times gone by. Eclectic interior, tea cocktails and a fancy dress box, you shall not be bored here. Small yet intimate and devilishly exclusive. You wouldn’t want to miss out on the place that got London’s cool kids buzzing.

Saturday
SW4, Clapham Common

If you missed Glastonbury, V Festival and Lovebox, there’s one more celebration of music that the whole city is heading to. If the camping always put you off, fear not SW4 is a day festival. Electronic music is the name of the game on Clapham Common this weekend where Pete Tong, Ibiza favourite James Zabiela and Pendulum will headline on Sunday with their final live appearance until 2013.

Sunday
Notting Hill Carnival

Europe’s biggest carnival is here again at Notting Hill, the place made famous by Hugh Grant. Steel drum bands, hundreds of Caribbean food stalls, 40 sound systems, colourful carnival performers – this is one lively day. You will forget the grey skies of London and be instantly transported to the hot Caribbean. This is helped by the fact that it promises to be the only sunny day of the weekend!

Monday
The Draper's Arms, a neighbourhood pub

Bank Holiday Monday is best spent recovering…in a pub. The Draper’s Arms in Islington will soothe that hangover with their delightful gastropub style menu. With all the comfort of a neighbourhood bar, The Draper’s Arms attracts from all over the city. The menu changes daily and according to what’s in season but if you’re lucky enough to see the Langoustines, aioli & salad and Braised Ox Cheek on the menu, you are in for a feast. If Sunday’s weather lasts, drink the rest of the day away in their cosy garden.

Happy weekend all!
