A Nice Slice of Americana

Saturday, June 25th, 2011

It is acceptable to keep things cool and casual on date. Relieve the pressure of a first date by choosing a restaurant that is unassuming, has great food and is bang on the money in terms of the cool factor. Where is this magical place?  Well, we’ve located it and it involves heading East.

Pizza Express, Zizzi’s, Strada or any of the other formulaic chains might be acceptable for catch up with friends or a post work dinner, they are NOT acceptable in the realms of dating. Why? The simple reason that they’re an easy choice, offer nothing interesting and fail in providing a new experience. Take a date there and you’re the equivalent of all those things. Though there is something about sharing a pizza with a date that immediately breaks down barriers by introducing that needed touch of familiarity.

Pizza East, Shoreditch, is a modern pizzeria that has taken up residence on the ground floor of the Tea Building. After opening in 2009 to much acclaim – “the most influential restaurant opening of the year” – this restaurant is one of the many children fathered by Nick Jones who counts Soho House and Shoreditch House as part of his uber trendy family. Take a date there and you’ve already gained points for just knowing about it.

The interior echoes its East London location with exposed pipes, concrete walls, and all over industrial style. Leather to add luxe and steel cafeteria style tables make this both edgy and contemporary. The staff are also part of this great restaurant’s atmosphere. Some have been pinched from L.A and their devilish good looks and charming smiles very much cement this as “the place to be”.

But let’s move on to the food. Pizzas blasted in wood ovens made on house recipe 10 inch bases with a basic selection ranging to more gourmet styles like the San Daniele, tomato, ricotta, pesto and ruby chard. The pizzas here are truly amazing. Even if you don’t want to go for the pizza option, there is a great antipasti menu from which you should probably choose the lamb meatballs and calamari. Meat and fish dishes cooked in the wood oven are perfect for a more a la carte style of dining or for starters, pick from the counter a plate of Mortadella and Prosciutto.

You won’t disappoint by choosing Pizza East as a date location. The venue, food and cool atmosphere will mean that you will tick all the right boxes here and maybe even surpass your date’s expectations. Trust us on this one.

Now that we’ve hit February (good riddance January!) it’s the perfect time to come out of hibernation and start making some plans. On the run up to Valentines’ Day, I’ll be telling you about the best/worst romantic restaurants, the most fun things to do and see, ideas for presents (don’t moan!) and also what you should/ should not be doing.

Firstly, you don’t HAVE to have a boyfriend/ girlfriend or even a date for that matter. If this year you’re protesting and saying “to hell with it” and refusing to go down the traditional date route, do not fret. Come and join the frolics at Funky Buddha on the 10th Feb for our “F*** Valentines” Party. Even better than that, we’ve put together a guestlist so you can check out who’s going. Maybe someone will catch your eye… Arrange to meet them in Mayfair and toast a glass of champagne to St Valentine!

A Suggestion For A Random Tuesday!

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

Having arranged to go on a casual double date, a colleague and I found ourselves stumbling around Soho trying to find somewhere that was fun, not too crazy, but more importantly where we could find a drink! We had been walking around trying to locate Milk and Honey and had failed miserably. We also couldn’t leave it up to the boys as they had originally met us at a bar that had rainbow lights beaming through the windows…

Barrio Central

One Tequila, two Tequila, three Tequila, Floor!

Exasperated with being lost, we decided to be pro-active, embrace the situation and fall into the next bar we came across. That bar happened to be Barrio Central on Poland Street. Mixing up Latin influences, you might feel like you’ve just walked into a Mexican tequila bar – in Spain! I felt like it was Summer again and in true Summer style, opted for a Mojito (or two, it was happy hour after all). The cocktail menu extends to different corners of the globe and if the Caipirinha’s don’t do it for you, their collection of rums and specialty tequilas is deep enough.

Head downstairs where things get lively. DJ’s play an eclectic mix of everything from salsa, indie to 90’s rock. If you’re lucky enough to get into one of the booths (we weren’t, so it’s best to book), try the food. Expect the usual in terms of pinchos, sharing plates, nachos etc with a few casual departures to the Carribean. Though it’s not exactly fine dining, it partners perfectly with the booze and keeps things fun and relaxed.

The last hour was a total blur and as sure as we fell into the bar, we also fell out of it and despite having to nurse a terrible hangover the next day at work, a random Tuesday was just what the doctor ordered.

Date night? – ideas for dates in London

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

It’s not always easy to pick the perfect place to impress on that first date, so if you’re planning on keeping it traditional with dinner and drinks, then here are some date ideas to take the stress out of it – meaning you can focus on your banter!

Head to Exmouth Market and give Dollar Grill & Martinis, Clerkenwell a go. Make sure you book ahead, particularly at the weekend, as it gets rather chocker. Reserve a spot in the cocktail bar downstairs for a pre-date drink to loosen you both up, and then move upstairs to the Vegas style restaurant, for dinner – the burgers come highly recommend (by me)! And if the drinks and chat are flowing, after dinner you can head downstairs for more cocktails or try out one of the other nearby bars or pubs in fashionable Exmouth Market.

It's cocktail hour!

If you’re meeting in town and want somewhere buzzy, then get yourself to Inamo in Soho – perfect for a date. It has everything you’ll need. A bar tucked away downstairs for pre or post dinner drinks and upstairs a pioneering oriental fusion restaurant where you can order from interactive menus projected onto your table. If you get a little to comfortable in the bar, then you can order your food from there. The food, atmosphere and service is second to none. Of course, there is no shortage of local Soho night spots to head to after dinner if the date goes well!

For a something a little more romantic, try Café de Thai – tucked away in Nottinghill. The small, but perfectly formed dining room is perfect for dinner for two and there is a pretty handy cocktail list. The menu is extensive and the specials really are… special. It’s a hit with the Nottinghill locals and it was hit was me as well. A really great option for a date in London.
